Default Trade Mark - What is It?

Hi,
I have a small lady's pocket watch. I think it is Swiss, The case appears to be silver with a gold wash over the outside edge of the front bezel and back cover. It has a cylinder type escapement and it is nail set. There is no marking on the dial or movement. Besides a serial number on the case (6161 2), the only mark I find (both on the case and movement) is a crescent moon with a star. Any ideas of who the manufacturer is?
Thanks in advance for any information.
Ticker,

Tickler,

I believe you refer to the "CRESCENT MOON AND STAR" being only on the case, and no mark, not even a serial number on the movement.

If I understand correctly that the movement is devoid of all markings, even a serial number, that would be rather unusual. Since you did not mention the dial, I presume it is not marked.

The Crescent Moon and Star were the Registered Trade Mark the Crescent Watch Case Company, one of the most prolific manufacturers of watch cases in the late 1800s and well into the first quarter of the 20th century. .

A lot of older, usually less expensive Swiss movements are not marked. However, in some instances the selling retail jeweler, department store chain or mail order house would affix their name to the dial and often the movement.

It would say from your description of the movement and case that like most watches of the era it was cased at the selling jewelers from the buyers choice of the cases on hand.

Your description of the case sounds very attractive. Hope this is of help to you.

Ther is another moon/star symbol which
I beieve is a Swiiss silver mark which often appears on Cylinder escapement
grade watch cases, and probably others.
But if indeed the same mark is on the mov't too then its probably a trade mark.
Without any name it might be hard to
find. The Kathleen Pritchard Swiss trademark book is a place to look and there's another that might work better
because the logo diagrams are presented on the edge of the pages for easy scanning. I can't think of the title but
I'm making a note to check the reference
tomorrow for it.

Cort,

Sounds like you are onto it! I found the description confusing, this is one where a picture or two would have cleraed it up early-on. It will be interesting to see what develops.
