Default trade watches

I was idly reading through a Montgomery Ward catalog from the early 1900s when I happened upon a description of what was called a trade watch. This is a 7 jewel watch intentionally faked to appear to be highly jeweled. I would like to learn a bit more about these, any links out there? (And I thought people used to be honest!)
