Fashion watches would definitely include watches by TOMMY HILFIGER, CATERPILLAR, FIELD AND STREAM, NIKE... the list goes on forever with companies who don't make watches, they just put their name on a generic product (whether it's cheap garbage or of decent quality) to make a buck.
personally, i don't care for some of them (the ones i've encountered at least) b/c of their lack of serviceability. like the fossil with caseback screws super glued in at the factory. screws that strip, break, and round off at the thought of a screwdriver turning it. why bother? i know most people don't know better, they only see what's advertised. and i know fossil has stores all over the place (never actually seen one, i live in arkansas) so people recognize the name. doesn't make it a good product. sure some of them are fine, some of them are garbage. and there's the argument that says, at least people are wearing a watch. well, they could be wearing a decent watch. for the same price they could have gotten a much higher quality citizen, seiko, casio, or for even LESS money, a TIMEX! i think it all boils down to ignorance of what's available. i guess. hm. |

Jeff,
I think you have indicated that you might start a poll regarding definitions of watches such as "fashion", "luxury", "beater", "tool", etc. Is there POLL function on this MB? There was on the "green" board as I recall. If there is a POLL function on this MB, this might be an interesting exercise! Doug |

Would the Jeweller watches fit into this niche as fashion watches of their day?

Doug,
The fashion watches you are speaking of are not really fashion watches as such--but--just junk. The fashion watches (of somewhat higher quality) most often referred to are those from the fashion houses that sell other items such as clothes-jeans-shoes and boots-purses--etc.etc. and would fall under the category of fashion and/or designers watches. None of these companies will make their own watch but will certainly have one sooner or later. A few examples of these companies woud include--- Gucci---Sergio Valente--G. Vanderbilt--Guess--Liz Claiborne--Vera Wang--etc. etc. and those are just a few of the many. |

What about brands like Cartier Ladies watches? 30 dollar 6 jewel movement, steel case and some really fine diamonds and voila! 7 grand.
Is it fashion watch? Or horological masterpiece? This is a longstanding argument and an interesting subject. |

I've been around long enough, and had enough experience, that I've seen what might be defined as "fashion" watches change many times, it appears. The fashion watches in my lexicon are fashion watches that are as ephemeral as "fashion" jewellery. In, in the spring- out by fall! "Fashion" watches such as Cartier as mentioned above, don't fit that particular definition. It would appear as though there are as many definitions for "fashion" watches as there are people who presume to define the word fashion, regarding watches. It used to mean CHEAP, yet up with current fashion jewellery (CHEAP) styling! Sounds as though that might have changed!
