One of the more interesting clocks my wife and I picked up the other day is this one, called the Globe, made by the Globe Clock Co. and containing a 30-hour Lux pendulette movement. Tran shows it for 1941 in vol. 3 of his American Clocks, page 316, # 895. We paid $71.25 for it; so, I don't think we did too badly.

FWIW, Spittlers and Bailey mentions three Globe Clock Companies (GCC). The GCC in question may have been the one started in 1921 at Philadelphia. However, Spittlers and Bailey mentions only "an interesting 8-day mantle clock (not a globe clock) that told time, struck hours and chimed quarters on only two trains, not three." The founder, Steven Pavky, was eventually involved in the Franklin Clock Company.
My information on GCC comes from Tran. Perhaps this is a fourth GCC? I am uncertain, but I like the clock.

I have one of these clocks, too! I think they're cool. Mine works great but the hour hand tends to come loose sometimes.
Mine has no paint on it, however. Someone apparently removed it at some point in the past. The "globe" of mine appears to be brass (or at least is brass-colored) and the base and supports are a gray, pot-metal-type color. I haven't photographed mine yet, or else I would post the pics here. There was also one of these in last week's silent auction by Horton's Antique Clocks: http://www.hortonsantiqueclocks.com/...images/27.html I don't see any results yet (and am not sure if they end up posting final selling prices), but they had projected this one to bring between $75 and $125, with a minimum/opening bid of $50. Congrats on your new clock! |

Mine has a pronounced "tick," but was much noisier because it was banging slightly against the columns. I bent the rod out slightly and it is now quieter. Not a great timekeeper at the moment, but fun to watch in any event.

Hmm, mine runs rather quietly. But then again, it's inside of a cabinet, so the sound might be somewhat muffled.
Mine is not the best timekeeper, either, but still fun! |

Seem to recall these having a tic tack escapement.

I have one of these that I bought in a disassembled state off ebay about 10yrs ago. I looked at the pics and realized that everything was there so I bought it for $20. I cleaned the pieces and assembled it and it runs like a top and actually keeps pretty good time.
I used to live in Lancaster, PA, USA and there is a large antiques flea market in the area and I saw quite a few of these things there. I've seen them in a variety of colors, including a sharp looking shiny bronze finished model. I have often heard them called 'baseball' clocks-- obviously due to the shape. Mine looks exactly like yours..white in color. It isn't overly noisy and it is one of my favorite novelty clocks. While I am in the process of thinning down my collection, I wouldn't part with this one. As Spaceman Spiff noted--They're cool. |
