I recently picked up a very crudely "restored" #1 E.N. Welch at an auction. It looked like a repainted Pacific Rim calender DO with it"s bright white paper dial and faux finish. The papers inside and out however, seemed to be legit
Being a case junkie, I immediately removed the poly finish and was quite surprised to find the variety of venners in what I assumed to be marketed as a rosewood case. The octogon faceframe is zebrawood veneer. The case sides are cherry veneer as is the pendulum door frame. The veneer around the door opening is mahogany. Secondary wood in most cases appears to be yellow popular. My question: Was this a common practice? I'm definitly not an expert but all of the indicators of authenticity seem to be there; the right movement, only one set of mounting holes; late 19th century hinges and fasteners; paper deterioration in keeping with age, etc. Thanks for any input, Chris B. |

It'sot completely to find different type veneers, but I can't vouch for Welch or your clock in particular. How about some pictures of what you have, and perhaps some of our Welch experts can chime in.
