After reading posts for a few hours, I have come to understand that you are pretty much all clock experts. Myself, I am just starting to learn a few things.
Anyway, I came across this clock. It has no key, (which leads me to believe that it is most likely broken). I would like any input that you would be willing to give. Also, see PIC #5. Is this a piece to the clock?? I am not yet familiar with this forum and it is quite b bit different from my motorcycle forum. Hopefully I will be able to respond to any questions that are asked. I am bookmarking this page. Now the pics: CLOSEUP OF THE FACE ![]() THE CLOCK ![]() THE BACK ![]() THE SIDE ![]() AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IS THIS A PIECE OF THE CLOCK

Hi Bill you have a nice Kern anniversary clock. And yes the piece shown goes with this clock. All i can see that is a problem is that your suspension spring is twisted. So likely a new one is needed.Just because it has no key does not mena it wont work.Likely it is wound right now.

Thanks for your reply. Keeping in mind that my experience working on clocks has been limited to changing AA batteries, what now? Who repairs them? Is it financially advantageous to have it repaired? |

First, WELCOME to the board and welcome to a GREAT buncha folks who love questions about clocks and those who ask 'em! Now, not all here are experts cuz I garontee ya, I'm not.
Anyway; "advantageous to fix it" ? Depends on your reason for fixing it - to keep and enjoy - to resale? I would like to move your topic to the "400 day" forum tho, and give your topic more exposure to those experts. I did delete your duplicate post already here as it had no replies and now redundant again. Last edited by Scottie-TX; 11-06-2009 at 08:55 PM. |

This forum is so similar to my motorcycle forum that it is unreal. The main difference is trying to figure out how to post. I have been trying for two days. At least I got to read a lot of good posts trying to get familiar with the board. Thanks again for deleting the one post and leaving the other in the right forum. |

Your Kern is in remarkable shape! Typically, a spring that's twisted like yours got that way because the clock wouldn't run, and some knucklehead twisted the pendulum around and around several times and let 'er go. Not a good thing. The 400 day clocks are fairly easy to work on, and would make a great beginner clock for you to repair. The main concern you'll have is taking extra care of the small pivots - they break easily. You could have it cleaned up for you, but the cost would surely be more than the value of the clock at this time. Hold on to it for a few years and that will all change

Even though the suspension spring is twisted, it still should be ok as long as there are no other reasons why to clock will not run. Try setting it in beat, it may surprise you.

. . . . . . . . and, "how would I set it in beat?", Scottie asks. How do I know it's in beat?

Bill, read the post from John Hubby in this thread about setting the beat in these clocks. http://mb.nawcc.org/showthread.php?t...highlight=beat
