    Default Cuckoo Not Ticking

    Hey everyone.

I have a Regula 25, 1 day. The verge was worn down and squeaking on the escape wheel. After polishing it, it still squeaked so I replaced the escape wheel and verge both.

Now the squeaking is completely gone, but now it will not stay running with the 275 gram weights. It will run for about a minute or so, and then stop.

What is bizarre to me is what it does when it stops. When I go to restart the pendulum, it makes no tick or tock. I pull it off the wall, and watch the escape wheel/verge; the escape wheel is not moving at all, and both sides of the verge are clearing the escape teeth just fine.

I am thinking there is an obstruction; but I can't even begin to imagine what..

    Any ideas?

UPDATE: It stopped again. I restarted the pendulum; still not ticking. I decided to push on the minute hand shaft just to see, and the clock started ticking immediately. 45 minutes later, it's still ticking. . . I'm still a little lost.

When it is stopped, wiggle each wheel back to the chain wheel. You should
be able to locate the jam.
    Things that could have happened:
    Bent pivot
    Bent wheel tooth
    Stretched chain
    Jammed chain
    stuff in pinion
    warn bushing

To add to Tinker's list, perhaps the new parts are not fully compatible. Try putting the old escapewheel back in to see if this fixes things.

Might be that the new wheel had a little meshing problem that was corrected when you moved the hands. Time will tell

Well, it's still running. I haven't had time to take the movement out and look at it, but it's still running. I'll let it go a week before considering it as problem solved.

Since it took off when you pushed the hand, I would guess the hands are somehow hanging up. Make sure the hour hand isn't rubbing on the dial and the minute hand isnt up against the hour hand tube. This happens a lot on cuckoos.

It can't be the hands. I removed the movement, and mounted it to a test stand I built with some scrap wood. It kept doing the same problem, without the hands mounted to the movement. I put the old verge and escape wheel back in; it still did it. I took the entire thing apart and cleaned it (again), checked all the pivots, etc. Reassembled it, and it's been running for an hour on the test stand. We'll see if it goes overnight.

Update: Right after posting, i went and checked on it. It stopped again. Exact same problem. If I wiggle any wheel on the time train, it picks right back up like nothing ever happened. I have no clue how to find the jam, since each wheel acts stuck.

It has been my observation over the years that at least 50% of the Regula 25 movements have a squeak that just won't go away, or comes and goes. ddhix you said you replaced the Verge and escapement wheel. Is it possible since the verge and crutch are one piece that it just needs to have the crutch bent to put it into a balanced beat while level. Get it ticking and tilt the clock right and left to see if it makes a difference. Hope it's just this simple. If not you will need to take it apart again check for free spin and side shake of each gear and gear tooth problems. I know your frustration. Had my brother in laws regula apart 6 times before I found the problem . I called it the cuckoo from h*ll. Good luck

You definitely have a power issue. I think I would at this point mark every wheel in the time train when it stops. Re-start it, and let run until it stops again. Check the wheels to see if any of them are in the same place. If so, there's your problem. Check the teeth and pinions for issues.

I just got a cuckoo with a music box. Of course, the
music box wasn't working. On taking it apart, I found the first
wheel on the governor had the wheel spinning on the
    arbor.
First, I had to soak it in acetone to get the instant
glue off. Then peen it to the arbor.
I was wondering how this happened. I'd noticed that
the side cover was missing and had thought it was
to increase the sound. I realized next that there was
    more to it.
In the middle of one of the two tunes ( happy wonderer ),
it would hang. They'd probably been sticking their finger
through the hole and forcing the tune to complete and
    had eventually loosened the wheel.
More inspection found a dented tooth on the gear wheel
of the drum. Not real bad but on the fine teeth, it was
enough. One could just see it under a loupe. It was easy to
find once I realized it wasn't the drum.
I suspect the clock stopping may be something similar.
A dropped wheel might be just enough to jam the movement.
As Bug says, make a mark on the wheels every time it stops.
If it stop "in the middle of the song", sort of, you should be able
    to locate the problem.

Thank all of you for your help.

I just wanted to update everyone on what the fix was.

I took the movement apart (again). I laid the plates down on my work bench. I noticed that the backplate was slightly bowed out towards the top.

At some point, the back plate became bent outward just slightly. Considering the cuckoo movement has such thin plates, I suppose the slight bending was enough to stop one of the wheels.

I flattened the plate back out, reassembled, and it's been running just fine.

Yeah, that will do it. No end shake will stop a clock every time Good catch!
