Default HAC table clock. How to turn off the chime?

    Hi all,

I am a new member and this is my first post in this forum.

    - I have just bought a Hamburg American Clock, the case was made in Sweden (David Brynte & Optisk Affär, Gefle - brass stamp on the back of the case). The clock size is about 30cm x 30 cm. The back of the clock shows W278, 2 arrows, 36 8. I would appreciate very much if you could help me to identify the age of this clock and how rare/common it is.

    - I also do not know how to turn off the chime of this clock. I tried to push down the lever (4), the chime stops, but the lever does not hold there as my hand leave it. Also what are the purposes of big holes (1), (2) and a small hole (3)?

(In the back side photo, I removed the pendulum for photo taking convenience.)

Sorry to say, some of these clocks were not made with the intention of silencing the strike. Leaving the strike train unwound would result in the dropped rack jamming against the snail sooner or later.

    Hi
    1 winds the time
    2 winds the chime
3 might be adjust the speed? It is missing the pendulum!!!
There was no chime stop switch intended for this clock.
I might be easier to let the chime run down.

    Hi
Some clocks were designed to operate with the rack fully dropped
and some were not. In any case, it looks like it has a broken pendulum
    hanger and missing the pendulum.

Thank you guys. In the back side photo, I removed the pendulum for photo taking convenience. The clock works fine.

Welcome to the message board, blueman.
August 1936 is a likely date for your clock.

I've seen some clocks like this, but I wasn't sure if this Junghans movement was one that used it.

If the clock can run fine with the rack dropped, then leaving the train unwound may be okay.

Some times the rack can be tied up with a piece of string or light wire.

The W278 was made by Junghans during the period from 1935 to 1961,
June 1938 is correct for your movement.
The actual movement design is HAC, Junghans used the crossed arrows mark
or the JH star at will on these.
Since the movement was cased in Sweden, the small hole might have been intended
for a different type of movement. The wholesalers often offered a choice of movement.
