Default Dating A Ridgeway Grandfather Clock

I Need Help In Dating A Ridgeway Grandfather Clock. I Recently Aquired It And Was Told That It Is 30+ Years Old. I Love It Everything Is Working As Designed Besides The Chiming Feature (Which To Me Is The Most Beautiful Part Of The Clock). I Hear The Barrel With The Chiming Pins Rotating But Not Sounding. The Clock Is Model # ST-112 Serial #91178. It's Time Weighted And In A Pine Inclosure. Can Someone Share Their Knowledge With Me? Thanks For Your Time, Patrick

    Hello Patrick,

    Can you post clock photographs?

Is the serial number on the case or movement? I would not be surprised if 1st two digits are the year: 91.

Try Googling "Ridgeway Serial numbers"? Someone might have so information.

Howard Miller Clock Co. purchased Ridgeway in 2005. Try contact Howard Miller, if company has any Ridgeway production records.

    Those are my best suggestions.

Hello Patrick and Welcome to the NAWCC message board. I'm not aware of a listing of Ridgeway serial numbers but it doesn't hurt to check anyway. If you can look at the rear of the movement there may be a date code on the lower part of the rear brass plate. It can be either numeric or an alpha code. This is usually true if the movement is made by Hermle. I don't know the maker of the Ridgeway movements but it could be Hermle.

Photos would help us provide you with more information. Please include the entire clock case and the movement if you can access it.

Thanks for posting and we look forward to seeing your clock.

    Best,

    Richard T.

Thanks For Your Quick Response Andy, The Serial Number Is On The Case. I Tried Calling Howard Miller And Was Told They Did Not Get Any Records From Ridgeway Through The Acquisition. So I'm Left Wondering Year It Was Made And Price Of Purchase & Value To Date. I Have Pics Also, Just Have To Figure Out How To Post On Here.

    Hello Patrick,

We look forward to the movement pictures and you checking for movement markings as outlined in my post #3 above. You will have to find any value information elsewhere since message board rules do not allow discussions of value. You might be able to check completed auctions for similar clocks. The value will not be high enough to require any additional insurance coverage.

    Best,

    Richard T.

    Hi, Patrick.

(Your posts threw me off for a moment because you listed the clock as Model 112 in your first post and Model 122 in your later post).

Your clock is Model 112, known as The Wakefield. It is shown in my 1977 Ridgeway catalog but could have been manufactured a couple/few years either side of that date. When new, it's suggested retail price ranged between $999 and $1399 depending on the movement (Westminster chime only, three-way chime, etc).

Note: I've listed the original price for informational purposes only. This is no way implies any current value (and, as mentioned, we are not allowed to discuss current values in this forum). One of our other members has given a good piece of advice for those wondering about the value of grandfather clocks: just like with cars, their highest price is usually when brand new, and their value takes a tremendous dip as soon as they leave the showroom floor. It would require many years for them to become a very rare and desirable antique and gain any type of value back.

Attached are scans from the catalog. Hope this helps!

Lots of the Ridgeway clocks have strings hanging down from the movement. They have rings and if that ring is anchored on a nail on side of case the hammers are lifted out of the way. This could give you the chime drum turning but no sound. There are a few other ideas but we'd need to see photos of the movement from back of case to tell.

Nothing says 70s better than pine furniture.

I think that one has a UW03 Urgos but only a picture will tell for sure.
