Default Seiko Quartz Chime Cock - cannot sync the chime

Hi, My name is dunk Sargent residing in Cambridgeshire UK and this is my first post. I have been collecting watches and clocks for 10 years and probably enjoy my clocks more than my watches. My collection includes several English railway clocks, two Seiko mechanical strike clocks, a JLC Atmos and this recent acquisition - a Seiko quartz Westminster/Whittington chime clock.

The clock is going well and the chimes and strike sound under test ie when the chime is switched. Under test the strike sounds in accordance with number of times the AM or PM button is pressed for the next hour. However, i have been unsuccessful in trying to set the chime and strike to operate when the clock is going even though I have accessed various instructions online for similar Seiko clocks (but not the same movement) including setting the time to 05.50 and removing and replacing the battery etc. and pressing the AM and PM button the required number of times for next hour o' clock.

The white switch just above the battery is the on-off switch which zeros the seconds hand and stops hands. The AM and PM buttons are above the white switch. The chime switch is above the AM and PM buttons ... and the volume button is top left. The hands are turned by the larger button adjacent to the white on - off switch.

Does anyone recognise the Seiko caliber No. QF 144S ?

Any assistance to correctly set the strike and chime would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks .

    Best wishes

    dunk

    Hi
It is not clear what your problem is. I think you are saying
that it doesn't sound on the hour but all the buttons seem
    to work fine.
If so, there is a switch that is activated by the rotation of
the minute hand. That switch is not working. It may have contaminated
contacts and need a light burnishing to restore it to working.
    Hope this helps some.

Hi Tinker Dwight, Yes I am trying to say that although the chime and strike work under test ie when the chime is switched over, it will not work when the clock is going ie on the hour and on the quarters. I assumed this was because I had not set the required combination of button pushings and battery insertions .. and maybe initial time setting eg 05.50 AM . However, if you think it might be a dirty switch that could be a possibility - I can hear the switch as the minute hand reaches and passes 12. So looks as if I might have to access the switch and check it and clean it. I will consider this step tomorrow.

    Thank you.

Most of these 1/4 hour chimers have an hourly switch, and an timing circuit for the 1/4 hour chimes. The latter are synched automatically to the hour switch. Get that part working and the rest should fall into place.

Welcome to the message board, Dunk.

I'm moving this to the clock repair forum for better exposure.

Translocated again to Electric Clocks, for even better exposure.
