    Arrow Books on early French Pendulum Clocks

    Somebodyin a private e-mail asked me to recommend the best books to identify early French pendulum clocks.

    Thought I would share my reply with the list here:

    To learn about French Clock you really have to look at the French books, and cant rely on the English language literature:

    The two classics are:

    The three volume set by Tardy:

    * Title: Pendule Francaise [La..] I
    SubTitle: 1er Partie: De l'Horloge Gothique a la Pendule Louis XV, [No. 129]
    * Author: [Lengellé, Henri] Tardy
    * Publisher: Tardy
    Keywords: anthology
    Language: FRE
    * Notes: The classic work on French Clocks
    Edition: 1974 No. 129 -- Copyright: 1974
    Kind: Book
    Type: Clock (general)
    Geographic area: France
    Topic: History
    Organization: NA/Other
    Pages: 224 -- Height in cm: 32
    Print Status: 2 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)

    * Title: Pendule Francaise [La..] II
    SubTitle: 2me Partie: Du Louis XVI a nos jours, [No.119]

    Organization: NA/Other
    Pages: 272 -- Height in cm: 32
    Print Status: 2 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)

    * Title: Pendule Francaise [La..] III
    SubTitle: 3me Partie: Provinces et Etranger, [No.110]
    * Author: [Lengellé, Henri] Tardy
    * Publisher: Tardy
    Keywords: anthology
    Language: FRE
    Notes: The classic French work on French Provincial and non-french Clocks
    Edition: 1964 no 110 -- Copyright: 1964
    Kind: Book
    Type: Clock (general)
    Geographic area: Europe-general

    This is out of print and hard to find, a set will cost you over $500, but it is the only comprehnsive publication on the subject.

    There is also a a english translation of only the text of Vol 2 available:

    * Title: French Clocks by Tardy - Part Two- From Louis XVI to the Present Day
    SubTitle: Translated from the French with the assistance of Alexander Ballantyne [No.133]
    * Author: [Lengellé, Henri] Tardy, Alexander Ballantyne[Translator]
    * Publisher: Tardy
    Language: FRE
    Notes: Seperately issued English translation of 2nd Part of Tardy, Pendules Francaises [No.119]. Later this was combined to create English Editions that also included the pictures.
    Edition: 1976, No. 133 -- Copyright: 1976
    Kind: Book
    Type: Clock (general)
    Geographic area: France
    Topic: History
    Organization: NA/other
    Pages: 37 -- Height in cm: 32
    Print Status: 2 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)
    Entered By: FMM
    BHM ID: 11192

    and I believe at one time there was aslo an english translation of the whole 3 volumes.

    Then there is:

    * Title: Encyclopedie de la Pendule Francaise
    SubTitle: du Moyen Age au Xxe siecle
    * Author: Pierre Kjellberg
    * Publisher: Les editions de l'amateur
    Keywords: history case highgrade advanced
    ISBN: 2 85917 244 0
    Language: FRE
    Notes: extremly comprehensive, encyclopedic book on french clock cases (not horological)
    Edition: 1997 -- Copyright: 1997
    Kind: Book
    Type: Clock (general)
    Geographic area: France
    Topic: ArtDesignFashion
    Organization: NA/other
    Pages: 526 -- Height in cm: 28
    Print Status: 1 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)
    BHM ID: 325

    which is still in print and which is comprehensive.

    The two English titles that are much less thorough are:

    * Title: Early French Pendulum Clocks, 1658-1700 - known as ' Pendules Religieuses '
    * Author: Reinier Plomp
    * Publisher: Interbook
    Keywords: clock pendulum

    Pages: 120
    Print Status: 1 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)

    BHM ID: 14748

    and

    * Title: French Bronze Clocks,1700-1830, A Study of the Figural Images
    SubTitle: With a Directory of 1365 Documented Bronze Tabel Clocks collected by Clemens von Halem
    * Author: Elke Niehüser
    * Publisher: Schiffer

    But these two English language books are much more superficial than the French titles above

    Hope this is helpfull

    Fortunat,

    Maybe you can help me. I've been frustrated in finding any information on this French clockmaker. The clock is signed on the dial and the movement DARCQ A Paris.

    Tardy's Dictionnaire does not list him.

    It is a Cartel clock... cc 1750-60 or so.

    Thanks , Ralph

    Hello Fortunat and other lovers of early French clocks,

    Thank you for this excellent and detailed information on early French clocks. Yes, I see this is an old post, but a good one. I found the Tardy book for the earliest clocks, but cannot find the Plomp book anywhere, not even a digital copy. Can anyone help?

    I keep finding people referring to Early French Pendulum Clocks, 1658-1700 by Reinier Plomp, but all I can find is a table of contents online.

    I have an early Boulle clock by Gosselin I would like to know more about, especially the date it was made. It has parallel sides with rounded top. Fairly simple for a Paris clock so perhaps 1700 or 1710? The dial is engraved with all 60 minutes.

    Anybody know where the Plomp book can be found, in print or digital?

    Kind regards,
    ~Dean Paul Terry
