elgin grade 50 mainspring

Looking for a mainspring for an Elgin grade 50. 16s, movement 1374633 and possibly someone to get it running and a case.

The mainspring would be a Elgin 817 or Bestfit JA104 (or a JA105 would do). Of course, if you are not doing the work, then finding a mainspring is the problem of the watchmaker.

Any 16 size case appropriate for 1882 would do. They were not factory cased. You went into the jeweler and chose a movement and a case and the jeweler joined them.

We cannot recommend a watchmaker if we do not know where you are.

I would like to respectfully disagree with Don D. on the casing of this watch. My experience is that the movement is slightly thicker that a standard 16 size and will not fit a standard 16S case. The movement also has a male winding stem and requires a female stem in the case.

I belive the end of the mainspring in these is shaped more like the 2542 spring in the picture the last one of these i serviced i used the 817 spring ,,what i did was cut one of the tabs off the 817 and filed a notch in the side too hook in the barrel,,you will not find a 2542 in white so the only thing too do is make the 817 work,,i will be taking one of these apart in the morning not exactley the same grade but a covertiable with a 3 finger bridge ,,the barrel i belive is the same i will take a picture and post it.

I need too correct my mistake don is right on the mainspring it does use the 817 another one i have on the bench takes the hook style mainspring .

How do I order the right mainspring for my Elgin pocket watches below? I will be taking a class in June and may need to replace the mainsprings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I opened the back of the pocket watches and obtained serial numbers. I reference an Elgin database to idenitfy these watches and now more confused as to which spring to order.

Elgin serial number 42280753 1943 Grade 387 Size 16s 17 Jewels
Elgin serial number J392405 1947 Grade 574 Size 16s Jewels
Elgin serial number 33798095 1932 Grade 313 Size 16s 15 Jewels

The pocket watch J392405 has a grade 574 and the listing for mainsprings is be models/grades. The mainspring 6164 in Merritts catalog supports dp grades 573,574,etc...but still not sure if this is the right one.

Do I need to remove old spring and measure Width, Strength, and Length to find proper replacement or is there a mainspring replacement based on the serial numbers listed?

You can order most available Elgin parts from Jules borel (www.julesborel.com) based on the grade. The grade 574 takes this mainspring... MS-JA107

According to my Swigart's catalog, the original part number is 6164. According to Jules borel's Horological Products Catalog (p.98), MS-JA107 is the mainspring to be used for Elgin's pn 6164.

You can look up most Elgin original part numbers using one of these sources: Elgin's 1915 Material Catalog, or 1950 Material Catalog, or Grade No. 571 - 575 Parts List.
With most of these sources- you use the class to look up the part number.
