Thread: Help with European Pocket Watches

  1. #1

Question Help with European Pocket Watches

Somehow, we ended up with two different, non-linked pages for the European Pocket Watches category. It appears to be pure chance which one a page ends up being listed in when using the category function in a Wiki article.

    Category:European Pocket Watches

    Category:European pocket watches

Can something be done to merge these and combine the listing of pages?

    Thanks,
    Kent

Kent, I moved this to the task force area to avoid confusion for the eventual users of the Encyclopedia as we sort these things out.

The two categories differed in capitalization. One had all three words capitalized and the other only the first word.

I merged them and deleted the one with first word capitalized. There was also a bug entry in the one that remained that came from a problem with the wiki some time back and I removed it.

There are no tools that I know of to do this, but it is a relatively easy database edit.

Question Re: Help with European Pocket Watches (By: Tom McIntyre)

    So, .....

.... now when I try to access the category page (or the Swiss Fake Wiki article), I get redirected to a screen that lists five subjects entitled European Pocket Watches along with some other messages.

Red face Re: Help with European Pocket Watches (By: Kent)

Kent, I think this may have finally settled down.

The situation was pretty complex with two redirects in the categories from European Watches and European watches and in the articles Swiss Fake and Swiss Fakes. (or something like that) since the software plays games with the capitalization, I never really got it sorted out. I don't even understand it well enough to explain it to the developers.

    Nope!

I just tried a one-time edit of Swiss Fake to add "category]European Pocket Watches[/category" (with the proper brackets at the ends) and got this message:

This thread is a duplicate of a thread that you have posted in the last five minutes. You will be redirected to the thread listings.
    I was then redirected to:
National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Message Board > Encyclopedia Tools > Wiki Categories > European Pocket Watches

Which opens up to an empty "Category:European Pocket Watches" page.

I didn't have the nerve to try that since it resulted in 16 new category entries the last time it happened.

I think I will just report it to the developers this time. It has me stumped.

Exclamation Re: Help with European Pocket Watches (By: Tom McIntyre)

OK, this problem is fixed. I reported it as a bug because of the bogus error message and that behavior was fixed with a patch. However, the behavior of not placing Swiss Fake in the category continued.

I finally noticed that the url for the category had the form European++Pocket+Watches. When I looked carefully at the title in the article I saw that it indeed had two spaces between European and Pocket.

The reason this caused so much difficulty is that the software generally tries to eliminate extra whitespace when forming keys and tags. I have also reported the inconsistency to the developers.

Now the category title is correct and one can enter the category name with an article to assign it to the category.

This will be fixed in a future release, but for now, whenever you create a category reference, the category is created also if it does not already exist.

You had 8 or more articles that had the identical typo of two spaces in the name. I presume you used cut and paste to generate the category references.

I just now edited all of those to only have one space.

Note that the bogus category was only reachable through the links in the articles with a reference to it. It was not visible in the category listing.

Please try to be careful with whitespace in category references until release 3.x of the Vault Wiki software. That release is expected sometime this Summer along with release 4.x of vBulletin.
