Default Help to Identify a Swiss Made Elgin Pocket Watch

I have this Elgin pocket watch - but there is no serial number to help date it. It says Swiss Made - I thought Elgin was American.

Can anyone help tell me more about this watch?

    Thanks.

The historic American Elgin Co. went out of the watch making business in the mid-1960s. The trademarked name "Elgin" is currently owned by a Long Island, NY importing company and I have seen Elgin marked quartz wrist watches for sale in Walmart. I believe that the original Elgin did sell watches made with Swiss movements in the 1950s and 1960s.

Your watch has a Swiss ETA Unitas 6498 movement which has been available since the 1950s, but I have a gut feeling that your watch is much more recent. The 6498 is a very good workhorse movement that is used by many companies to assemble pocket watches and the large wrist watches that are in vogue right now.

Based on the fact that your movement has a beat regulator, I would say it's probably from the mid-seventies or newer. Old pocketwatches (or watches) didn't have beat regulators or shock systems, which yours also has.
