Default July. Skeleton regulator with Gregorian and Republican calendars. Robert Robin.

    Robert Robin

Skeleton regulator with Gregorian and Republican calendars

    Brass, marble, steel
Height: 48 cm. Width at base: 35 cm. Depth at base: 16 cm
Main dial signed: Robin Gallerie du Louvre
Movement spring signed and dated: Monginot An 12 (1804)

    Circa 1796 - 1799

Besides the hours, minutes and seconds, the main annular dial indicates the days of the week and their planetary signs with a double blued steel hand. Four other dials show, on the right, the Gregorian months and dates and, on the left, the Republican months and dates.

A green marble base supports the spring-driven movement which has a pin-wheel escapement and a gridiron pendulum, with a thermometer and a knife-edge suspension, beating half-seconds. The locking-plate striking-work sounds the hours and half-hours on a bell. The thermometer dial bears the inscription Elementa Suis Propriis Victa (the elements vanquished by their own arms).

The remarkable workmanship and aesthetic functionality of this regulator illustrate the level of perfection attained by great late-18th century Swiss and French horologists like A.-L. Breguet, J.A. Lpine, A. Janvier, F. Berthoud and R. Robin.
