Default How to clamshell watch case stay closed?

Every once in a while I will see a clamshell watch case on ebay, either the hinge is opposite the pendent or some hinge at the 8hr area and seem to swing slightly to one side. I have seen some that look like they have some type of latch anothers nothing that I could see. I suppose the ones without any latch would just snap lock, is this the case for most of the others or is there some type of pin or latch?

I presume by "clamshell" you mean a Hunting Case, the kind with the lid that covers the dial.

These have special springs built into the case and a small latch that is attached to the spring, and is operated by pushing down on the crown. The latch makes contact with the inside of a groove in the lid when the crown is not being pressed, thereby holding the lid in the closed position.

Over the years, that groove in the lid can tend to wear down, eventually to the point where the contact it makes with the latch is inadequate to hold the lid closed. There's not much I know of to resolve that problem. Perhaps others can offer some advice.

No I am talking about a clamshell open face case. The movement is mounted in a ring that has a pendent. You open the clamshell and you can completely remove the movement and pendent and the case is hinged and has two areas that fit around the pendent when it is closed. I have hunter watches so I know people sometimes call these "closed face" cases but this is an open face case that has two parts, when the movement is mounted the ring mount with pendent and the clamshell case that has the front and back hinged.

I don't think that he means a hunting-case. Clamshell Cases have a bezel that "snaps" into place and a movement ring that is friction-fit, like those on Swing-Ring Cases.

P.S. I see that we both responed at the same time. Yes, some clamshell cases have an independant movement ring, in lieu of one that hinges out.

I think he is talking about a pair case. such as you find on fusees cases and some early key wind American cases. If you would post picture of case we maybe of more help with your question.

The lip of the cover snaps on the ring that is around the other side of case that has the glass in it. When the cover is bent or the lock ring is badly worn they won't stay closed. The fix is to adjust either the cover or the locking ring. Not an easy job even with the proper tools. Hope this helps.

    Bill:

That picture was posted by John as a question. Were still not sure what 49stude63 (the person who started this thread) is asking about.

The case that John P. posted is the type of case I am talking about. I have seen some with some type of latch but others without anything that looked like a latch so I wonder if they were snap fits like the back of most hunter cases.

Try closing the pair case it self without the watch inside, to see if it closes properly.
