There was a Mahlon D. Ogden, a "millionaire real estate developer" whose house survived the Chicago fire of 1871. Wayne Schlitt's site identifies M.D. Ogden as a possible investor.

Another reference described Mahlon as the brother of William B Ogden. William was the first mayor of Chicago and the founder of the Galena and Chicago Railroad. Benjamin W. Raymond was the third mayor of Chicago, board member of the Galena and Chicago and the founder of the (Elgin) National Watch Company. It is likely that Raymond knew the Ogden family and certainly possible that Malthon was an investor in the company.

On pages 94-95 of ďThe Complete History of Watch Making in America - Reprinted from the Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review 1885-1887," Charles S. Crossman, Adams Brown Co., Exeter, NH, undated, but probably late 1980's, Crossman states:<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Later this line was further increased by the addition of four more grades of 18-size movements, named respectively the "W.H. Ferry," "M.D. Ogden," "J.V. Farwell," and "Chas. Fargo." They were all named after gentlement who had become connected with the directory (Kent's note: i.e. directors of the company). </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
