Won't run Schatz & Schone 49
I have a Schatz 49. I have replaced the torsion spring taken the winding spring out with my spring winder and clean and oiled with slick 50, took all the gears out and burnished the pivots and used a smoothing broach on the pivot holes, check the fork width, did a run down, with the verge out and of course put it in beat and still it does not run. Any suggestions.

With the verge out, and the mainspring let down, how many turns on the spring does it take to get the gears spinning? It should take off on very little power. If there is any slop in the pivots, put bushings in. Your problem sounds like a lack of power. Harold

If you have the Horolovar book, there is a good question and answer section that will help you in diagnosing the problem. Also, the cross reference chart for use in diagnosing escapement problems would be helpful.
I would suggest that you consider the possibility of a pivot being bent. This can happen quite easily during assembly. Harold's suggestion as to removing the anchor, running it down, then winding slowly, counting the turns until the train begins to spin, is a good one.
If the unit guard (suspension spring cover) os off, and if it is one that is held on with screws, look to see if perhaps you have one of the screws turned in far enough to drag on the barrel.
You don't mention the condition of the suspension spring, BUT, if it is at all twisted when the pendulum is at rest, the clock will not run. Replace the spring for the correct one.
With the suspension all off, have you manipulated the anchor through at least one revolution of the escape wheel? There might be a bent escape wheel tooth.
I hope your efforts with the smoothing broach haven't resulted in an excessively loose bearing. Where did you learn that applying a smoothing broach to the bearings in a clock that has likely run successfully for years, is a smart move? I've never heard of such a thing!
Do you have the cannon pinion clutch mechanism on the minute hand shaft installed correctly? Is there anything on that shaft dragging on the front plate? Might the minute wheel be binding on the shaft, or on the retainer washer?

With the verge out it takes two clicks to get the movement starting to spin with the hands on. I did not put alot of pressure with the smoothing broaches. I put a new torison spring on so it is not twisted.
I agree is defintely is a loss of power somewhere. The escape wheel just seems dead when you start the pendulum moving.

With the train as free as you say it is, and owing to the fact that the escape wheel is "sluggish" as you say it is, I suspect a bent escape wheel tooth. Have you tried manipulating the anchor with the suspension parts off? Go slowly through several revolutions of the escape wheel, watching closely with magnification, and I'll bet you will see a hesitation in the escape wheel at one point.

Thanks Doug tomorrow I will try that and let you know how it works. I really appreciate everyone's interest.

I took the time train completely and I started to run. I cleaned the hour and minute gears in my ultra sonic and started putting it back together as the clock ran. So far it is running so evidently there was something on the time train. Thanks for the advice another lesson learned.

I had a similar problem with a 400 day clock. I installed new main spring I tried a new escape wheel recleaned , cleaned the bearing hols with pegwood . after looking closer at the bearing holes they seemed a little rough so I ordered a set of smoothing broaches I lightly used the smoothing broaches and (bingo) it worked !! Clock runs great!
