    Default Zaandam Clocks

How can tell the age of Zaandam clocks. I have two of them-one appears to be old, solid wood walnut finish only marking on the bras backplate"ELCO' black cloth dial plate with four brass corner castings one which is missing. Is ther any suppliers besides normal ones Merrites, timesavers, etc. The other clock is newer as the back part of the case is made of partical board, it has the blue dial and trim. It is marked on the back plate:
    83
    Franz Hermle 23cm
    No (0) Jewels 136
    Unadjusted
    Made ....... (can not read)
    261-080B

    Thanks

    Default Zaandam Clocks (RE: dickyt)

Clocks like your later one were sold here in UK in furniture shops and mail-order catalogues in the 1960s and 1970s - many turn up on ebay, described as 'Dutch' or 'Zaandam'. They are neither!
Clocks actually made in the Zaanse region of the Netherlands (area north of Amsterdam) in the 18th and 19th centuries have a posted frame movement, verge escapement, and usually two bells - one to strike the half hour. They also have a striking system with no warning and only one lifting-piece.

    Keep ticking

Dick, your Zaandam with the Hermle movement was made in 1983, according to the info at top of your post. Harold

Thanks for the info on the newer clock, I suspected that the 83 was the year as particle board has not been around thjat long.

I'm still looking for info on the other one That only had Elco stamped on it.
I just completed a restoring it. I made the moulding that was missing. attached is a picture.
    thanks again
