Default Is this Lenzkirch free swinger fake?

Lenzkirch stamp on workings says 1 Million 121951, so maybe around 1860. A supposed expert said the casing was 25 years old. I'm not sure how to tell. On the back, there is a 3 stamped on a molding but no other markings. I've had it for 20 years so it seems real to me. The workings appear authentic and the "expert" agreed. Would someone really make a fake casing and make it look old? Any opinions, comparisons, etc., would be much appreciated!

    Don,

    Welcome to the board!

I would date the movement as older than 1860, more towards 1900 or so, based on the "1 million mark".

From the pictures, I can not opine on the case as being of the period or not. To my eyes, it looks of the period. Others will stop by and give their opinions.

The following link is dedicated to Lenzkirch and has a plethora of information.

new2clocks: Didn't you mean to write 'newer' than 1860? But I agree with you, it is certainly after 1860 and yes, 1890-1900 would be my guess too.

Don: I see no reason to suppose the case is not original but unfortunately the photos do not enlarge.

    JTD,

I meant to say newer than 1860. Thanks for catching that and apologies for any confusion.

and you've had it for 20 years, which means it would have looked brand new when you got it.

also... i have clocks over 100 years old where the cases look new... how did he hone in on 25 years... did he count rings? 8-)

the real issue is that larger photos are required if you want more informed answers... but based on what little we can see from these photos it seems legit.
i collect antique clocks because i get all that extra time...

It appears to be original as far as I can tell. Better quality pictures that can be enlarged would help. However, I would say that you have an original Lenzkirch case. As far as your question if "someone" would build a fake case, well, sure. It may not be intended to be sold as an original but simply an attempt to copy the original. I have several Lenzkirch movements that I plan to build cases for. The real challenge is to match the quality of the original cases!
