    Default Illinois "Hudson" pocket watch

    Hello all.

I am brand new to the forum and relatively new to collecting pocket watches. Today I added to my modest collection a beautiful 1877 Illinois Hunter case, key-wind watch (18s). The case is solid 18 k gold and it is a beauty.
Engraved on the movement, along with the manufacture info and the serial is the name "Hudson" in a cursive script.
This is probably an ignorant question but I cannot find anything on an Illinois Hudson watch. What does the Hudson mean?

    thanks

    Hello Mark and Welcome!
Sounds like one of many Illinois private labels. Can you upload some photos?

I have a couple of them and would be interested in seeing if they match.

One of mine is very close to yours at #204283. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out much about who these were made for.

The fob looks very interesting, are those teeth?

They're the ivory canine teeth from an American elk, Cervus canadensis. I have had cufflinks, tie tacks, and earrings made from them.

Dave, thanks for the interest and that is a very close number between our two. Is your casing made of gold, as well?

Glen, sharp eye by you as you are exactly correct that those are elk teeth. Was it fashionable at the time to have jewelry made of elk teeth?

Elk's teeth were (are) popular with Elks. https://www.elks.org/who/information.cfm

Mine is just a stray movement, so it's possible it was in a gold case that was scrapped. I have another at #217246 that is in a coin silver case.

There is a possibility that the 'MB' monogram is for Meister & Bierbaum of St. Louis, but I have no proof of this.
