Default question: RE "Elgin Movement" on dial

question: RE "Elgin Movement" signature on dial

I'm looking at a late 1890's Elgin 12s pocket watch with "Elgin Movement" on the dial
I've read that Watches with dials that state “Elgin movement” are private label watches?
It may be a replacement dial.

I googled “Elgin movement”, on dial and saw some much later wrist watches with
    the same on their dial.

The 12s BW Raymond I recently bought had a "Elgin Movement" dial. It definitely looked like it didn't flatter the movement so we figured "replacement".
(I recently put on a double sunk dial.)

    Before the change:

    After the new dial:

I think I answered Mike on his dial, that they are metal painted dials offered by the material dept. as a generic replacements.

    Rob,
I am definitely no expert, but the "Elgin Movement" marked dial looks like a later replacement painted metal dial! I have never seen original Elgin ceramic or porcelain dial marked this way.

This one is metal, with gold applied numbers. I think it may be re cased and new(er) dial.

Interestingly this is also a grade 193 (but not marked B.W. Raymond) it's
very a low production one from the first run.
Don't know if I need another one of these grade 193's, but I do
really like the jeweled barrel. lol

Was there a possible desire to make a distinction involving movements that were in cases not made by the movement manufacturer?
Or the operative question, is the case an Elgin case?

    Dave,
In Rob's post #1 he says that the movement is a late 1890's model.

Elgin ( and for that matter) most companies did not make cases for their movements until the 1920's
