    Default Extra Large Elgin movement

Hello everyone,I recently acquired this SIZE 37 watch / clock. I wasn't sure if I should post it in this forum but I thought maybe there would be more Elgin experts here than in the clock forum.
AS I UNDERSTAND IT..... Elgin never REALLY got into the clock making business. I have seen MANY clocks that have the Elgin name attached to them but they were not made by Elgin. These were either made in Germany or Japan or elsewhere.

    BUT.....

This is an actual Elgin movement that you can search the SN in Wayne's data base and it gives you....
    Year... 1926, Grade... 471, Size... 37, Jewels... 7, 8 day movement.

I know that Elgin made some large movements that were used as wind-up car clocks. I have seen these and they have a L..O..N..G winding stem. But, this one has a short stem and a fancy dial. The octagon shaped bezel makes it look like it belongs in a clock case.

This movement is a size 37 movement, which when translated into inches would be about 2 3/8".
For comparison, an 18 size movement is about 1 13/16".
    SO....

    2 3/8" minus 1 13/16" gives a difference of only 9/16"...... Just over 1/2"..!!
(that is not a whole lot...)

So you see, a 37 size movement is not TWICE as big as an 18 size movement. There is really not that much difference in actual size.

I guess you could fit it in your pocket...... MAYBE.

Anyway, any of you Elgin guys have any idea of the history of this animal?

yes, over size pocket watch movement with two main springs.

these are out of Elgin's 8 day travel clocks, an adventure in its self if you start out in it

if you do start collecting these, do your research, there are a lot from the 60's that look older than they are.

    Thanks diveboy....
I can see your movement and winding stem are similar to mine. SO... it appears that someone has robbed this movement out of a folding travel clock stand?

Do you have any idea how many of these Elgin travel clocks were made?

I see on Wayne's data base that there was about 377,500 of the serial numbers allotted for the 471 movements. I know a lot of those went to car clocks.

"In Roman mythology, Veritas, meaning truth, was
the goddess of truth, a daughter of Saturn, and the mother of Virtus.
It was believed that she hid in the bottom of a holy well
because she was so elusive. Her image is shown as a young
    virgin dressed in white" google
    RE: the travel clock

I guess you should build a little stand for it, as the crown is on the bottom.
(it's not a side winder but a bottom winder)

Yep, not a bad idea. I wouldn't mind having a real Elgin stem winder sitting on my nightstand.

I dunno - I sleep with 5 16s, and 2 18s watches ticking away on my nightstand. And they're usually drowned out by the sound of the tree frogs down by the creek!

They're too busy trying to get... Er, um, I mean 'trying to fulfill their biological imperative'.

    If you catch my drift....

We have in New York State spring peepers, they are small frogs
and they are LOUD. In the spring when we have our windows open
there are times when they are all in unison(trying to find a mate)
    and it's hard to sleep.

    I dunno - I sleep with 5 16s, and 2 18s watches ticking away on my nightstand.

Every once in a while I wind up 15-20 watches. I have them in
a curio cabinet, and when you open the door they are like spring peepers. lol
