Default Question on a Waltham 1883 movement.

I picked this up cheap mainly to have on hand as spare parts. It's got me asking some questions.

Its in an English made case, 7j, key wind, American Watch Co. marked made 1896. Both the database here and pocket watch database list this as an 11j Broadway grade. Clearly that's an error. It appears to just be a plain 7j key wind movement for English export.

Ok, so was there a question here or are you just reporting the error?

Yup - nice case but common, unremarkable movement & dial. You have my blessing to use the movement for parts and the case to house the more-interesting movement of your choosing.

Sorry i wasn't too clear. I was just confirming if in fact it was an error in reporting. It's not the first I've found in these export movements. My other marked "The Piccadilly" had been listed as 7j, when it and the other 3 reported examples were 11j.

The database contains a caveat for numbers above 7,455,000 that they were not included in the handwritten ledgers and were taken from the "gray book." Waltham created the series of serial number lists for use by watchmakers in ordering parts. They purposely consolidate grade names and jewel counts to keep the volume to a reasonable size.

If you use the nawcc-info database, you may click on the link to the gray book or the handwritten ledgers to see the original source material.

Eventually those records may be corrected when we have enough observations to restore the granularity of the data.
