    Default Gruen Verithin Pocket watch

I am looking for any and all information on a Gruen Verithin Pentagon pocket watch I picked up a few months ago at a yardsale. I really don't know much about it besides its 14k, 17 Jewel, Pentagon watch from 1922 or later. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

One thing I can tell you is you want to get rid of that yellowed plastic crystal. It's degrading and the fumes are what rusted the hands, and it's probably getting to work on the rest of the movement.

It looks like a nice watch and, fortunately, it takes a round crystal so it will not be difficult to replace the bad one. The 17 jewel watches with no jewel in the center are inherently interesting because a performance decision was made that the cap jewels on the escape wheel were more important than the center jewels.

The case is really wonderful because of the inscription. You need to do some research and find out who won the second award in the College Humor Cartoon Contest in 1930. That was, after all, the height of the depression and it would have been difficult to find humor or stay in college.
