    Default Strange Clock!

Found this unusual clock in Cajun country. Looks like a basket case right now. Looks like something is missing on top. I would guess a lion or horse or such. Cannot find name anywhere.it has a steel dial plate, but the rest is either brass or pot metal(magnet will not attach). Any ideas appreciated.

It reminds me of my British clock. The original movement in mine looks a lot like the one you have pictured. I'll see if I can find pictures of the old movement.

Thanks, Jim. Would like to see that movement. Thought it might be one horse or lion etc. Never thought about rearing horses.

Making a little progress. Got to put on bezel and glass and find a horse or some other animal for top. Got it running. New mainspring. Rusted main arbor. Cleaned up movement. No bushings needed. I'm starting to like this crazy clock the more I work on it. Looks like it was antique gold color originally, but don't know if I should paint it or not. What do you think?

Were it mine, I wouldn't try painting, but would like to see a bit more sheen on it. Maybe some dark / black wax to shine it up just a little? Definitely looks nekid without it's top adornment, probably a tough piece to match for it.

There have been many bronze and spelter casting of the Marley horses made. If you can find one that is the size you need it might look great on your clock.

I bought the clock a year ago at an estate sale. The original unsigned movement works well, but the bezel is missing. I found several examples of the clock with french movements and tried a few I have.

The case says "British Make" in raised dot letters on the rear. The dial has Foreign under the 6. My feeling is someone in England made the case and bought various movements to complete the clock.

Here's a few shots of mine as original and married. Note: The last picture is not mine.

I plan on putting the original movement back in the case and passing this one on at National.

So, Jim, is that movement shown in the photo the original movement?

Thanks Scott and Dwarve, for your suggestions. I like the idea of polish rather than paint. I'm looking for an appropriate top. Thought I would close in holes on top with JB Weld. Then mount a new top wherever the it fits best.

Well, I made a little progress. My wife found a couple of fighting roosters for the top of the clock. Drilled and tapped each one below both feet and inserted four screws, cut off the heads of the screws, drilled holes in top of case, and inserted screws. Then I screwed nuts on each screw, tightening roosters taught. Have bezel ordered. Might turn out ok. What do you think? Not original, but unique and no longer a basket case.
By the way, I used black shoe polish all over the case. Covered up most flaws. I used JB Weld to fill in holes on top, then used ebony Rub and Buff to cover up welds.

Yes, indeed! Very nice choice for the toppers. Isn't it amazing how so often our spouses help with our hobbies? It is so nice when both parties enjoy the same interests!

As an aside here, I have found that the various shades and incarnations of Rub-N-Buff are quite helpful in restoring all manner of antiques, including how WOW used it on his clock. Very nice job for certain!

    Best to all,

    George

Well, with your help, I got it all together. Found bezel at Timesavers and found glass in my stockpile, installed it, and there we are. Not a valuable clock, I know, but fun to do. Made something out of nothing. Love it!!!
