Default Question about unmarked gold cases

I saw an interesting IWC wristwatch today, which had an 18k gold mark on the outside of the case back (18K inside a triangle,) but inside the case back there were no markings whatsoever. I don't believe this is normal. Is this something common and I just haven't seen it before?

I'd be real skeptical, if I were you.

I thought that too Hawk53, but it has a weight like gold and isn't yellow but rather pink gold. I wondered if it might be a privately made case, but why would someone have gone to that expense? The lack of any markings on the inside case back is odd.

Real odd IMO. It could be a small company privately made case, but why would they go to that extreme and not mark the case properly?

Agreed. At the very least I would expect to see a makers mark or the key symbol.

I saw this at an antique mall as the dealer was putting it on the shelf and he became incensed that I would question his description.

    I'm still curious though

Any "reputable" dealer usually welcomes questions, those that don't, aren't reputable! or end up with a reputation that honest people don't want!

Remember the old saying about "curiosity killed the cat".....

    Good point Hawk53.

I've been doing some research online and I haven't found any vintage cases that don't have some markings inside the case backs. The only markings this case had on the outside of the case back were the 18k inside a triangle and a serial number.

Nice watch but at this point I'm going to have to assume a plated steel case and a fake stamp.

Just out of "morbid curiosity" what was he asking for the watch?

With taxes $1500 CAD. And I just realized I made a mistake in my first post; it was a JLC, not an IWC.

Thought I'd post an update. Someone ended up buying the watch. I certainly hope they didn't get burned on that one.
