Default New Yorkers Have 3 weeks for Sundial Exhiibition

Those living near NYC, and those who expect to pass through soon, have until April 23 to view the unprecedented display of sundials from ancient Greece & Rome at the Insititute for the Study of the Ancient World, part of New York University. The free exhibit, entitled "Time And Cosmos in Greco-Roman Antiquity" is at the ISAW museum at 15 E. 84th St., just a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum, open Wed. & Thurs. 11-6, and Friday 11-8. On Fri. at 6PM there is a docent led tour of the exhibit.

    Best allot a few hours.
Though small, this is probably the most important exhibit of ancient sundials ever mounted in this country. Many institutions from around the world have contributed rare objects for display. At a time when many museums are dumbing down their presentations, the ISAW refreshingly eschews "infotainment" to include technical and scholarly data, as well as sociological context. Computer simulations of some of the sundials on tablets show time-lapse videos of their operation. If you've ever been stymied by the obscure scrawls on ancient walls which comprise some sundials, this will help dispel some confusion. Several related scholarly talks have also been given. There is a beautifully produced hardcover book associated with the show, of the same name, important on its own, which is available on Amazon.
    Not to be missed!
