I lucked out and found a regulator for this watch. It's not the correct colour, but I didn't want to buy a movement and cannibalize it just for a regulator. I think I can have the arm gold plated if I decide to. I'm hoping it will fit, but the seller is a good guy and said I could return the parts if they don't work.

    Paul,
Lucky you. Is the regulator assembly from another 1892 model or from another waltham model?
The reason I ask is that I'm seeking a complete assembly for an 1892 vanguard 21j. I 'm also looking for a pallet fork for a 23j 1892 Vanguard. Like you I do not wish to purchase another movement just to canabalise it, that is unless it is already missing parts. Sourcing 1892 parts in the UK is a tad more difficult (and expensive!) than in USA.

    Hi Allan.

The seller is clearing out watch parts and these two are from a pair of 1892s. I think the star regulator may be from a grade 845. The other one used to be an Ohlson regulator but was replaced with a whip spring.

This seller also has two 1892 parts movements for sale. I'm going to PM you the link so you can see them.

    Paul,
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have been successful and now have one of the parts (regulator arm) I need and in addition an 1892 "Riverside", all be it partial, movement to enjoy and perhaps in time restore to working condition.

Very happy it worked out Allan

I'm glad I didn't find these listings until the last day. It seems no one else noticed them either and we both got good deals.

I have said this before. Be advised. In the approx. 25 year existence of the model 92, Waltham made multiple changes in design, specs, and overall parts changes. Just because you order a palate fork, doesn't mean it will work.

The model 992's are a bear to fit parts. Just so you know, it is not easy.

Too true Tom, I have 3 Crescent St and an 845 all waiting on those elusive parts and sadly none of them interchangeable

Oh, that's disappointing to hear. Hopefully the regulator arm will work.

You should be safe with that Paul, but if you find out it is different then it is yet another part to add to the growing list of subtle changes that Waltham made. Differences that I have encountered seem to be confined to the balance shaft, escapement (wheel and pallet profiles and pinion lengths), lever set mechanism but I am sure that other differences have been noted.

    Thanks All,
I had already read about the difficulty with parts interchangeability on this Waltham model. In trying to repair my 23j 1892 Vanguard the pallet fork from my 21j Vanguard and from my 845 have been tried with no sucess. One can but keep looking in the hope!!!
The other partial 21 j movement I have just bought (witout pallet fork!!) will hopefully provide the last part for my 21j vanguard -- being the star regulator arm.

I've just restored a Waltham and decided to change a few parts. My donor movement was the same model and grade and year but it was a complete waste of time, none of them fitted. The hour wheel wouldn't even fit over the canon pinion! And I thought machine made watch parts were interchangable, He! He! I suppose over 120 years that many parts have been changed or modified by watch repairers that this is what makes it all interesting!

Hi Allen, To replace your palette fork, it must come from a 23j Vanguard. the 23J fork has conical pivots to go in a cap jeweled pivot. The 845 and the 21J forks have open pivot jewels and have cylindrical pivots. they will not interchange.

With respect to fitting a new pallet fork or escape wheel to an 1892 model Waltham (and some other contemporary models), also keep in mind that Waltham changed the design slightly at one point, requiring that the pallet and escape wheel be matched if you are doing any switching or replacement.
