Sorry, but if the NAWCC is going to insist on hosting all photos posted here(even if externally linked) I will no longer post photos on this board.

I don't know how many other folks feel as I do, but my photos are mine and I prefer to retain control of them.

If this is going to be policy of the board, I will have no issue going "over the heads" of the administrators and making my concerns known to the BOD. And, as I said, if that does indeed become policy I will no longer post photos on here.

If you put pics on ebay, or facebook, or anything like that you have to give them free use or they can't publish them. It has always been like that. You can watermark them to stop further use without attribution but it isn't going to be too difficult to doctor that usually unless you meke the watermark quite obtrusive.

I like that the pics are loaded to the server rather than just provided as links. Going to very old threads and finding the links broken is tedious and doesn't go with the educational aim of the board.

To me this is a brilliant resource for that very reason, and I post pictures of my clocks not because there is a massive interest here in the type of clocks I collect but because I know that the resource will be available for others who do have an interest in the future.
Nick, lots to learn, late starter.

    "Conversations??" What are threads called?
XenForo uses the term discussion in place of thread in most of the visible locations. Internally, they are still threads and posts, because those make more sense to programmers.

Ben, Please do bring this up with the BOD. They have expressed very little active interest in the Message Board to date. Your pictures are still your pictures. You own the copyright. However, you grant the NAWCC an unrestricted right to use them when you post them here. If you do not want to do that, you should not post them.

We, in turn, claim the right to protect the integrity of the Message Board by not allowing you to change the content of linked images at will. For example, you cannot substitute porn for the original image, as some have done in the past. Since we cannot continuously monitor the content of all the images in all the posts, the external references are inherently dangerous.

I do not think the threat of bad substitutions is an important threat, but loss of the future integrity of the contents is real threat and has happened to us in the past.

Ben, please bring this up with the BOD. And please watermark your photos if you think they might be misused. Tom echoed MY priority on this in the part of his quote that I bolded.

When I first started here, it was a MUCH bigger problem than it is now - partly because a lot of photos were lost during previous software conversions. MANY posts that I wanted to learn from were totally useless to me because the external photos had disappeared. Without the photos, I had absolutely no idea what the text of the posts was discussing. I didn't know enough (yet) to imagine what the photos should have shown me. Most of those posts aged out of sight long ago, and very few current threads/posts have missing photos. And I'd like to be sure that future newcomers aren't left in the dark like I was. For all practical purposes, everthing I've learned about clocks was learned here. MUCH of that from the photos.
The only truly stupid question is the one you SHOULD have asked - but DIDN'T.
