Default Got Caught by Inexperience With New Clock

    Hi all,

Well...I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later so since it happened sooner, I hope I can learn from this. I saw this pretty drop clock in the antique mall today and fell in love. Looks old, smells old and everything was working so I figured I'd take a chance at $90. The seller wasn't in the store so I couldn't remove the face to check the movement.

When I got it home and opened it up...Made in Korea! Ugh. And the face plate is taped to the ring. I could have sworn this was an old clock because the coil for the chime looked old and the case looks really old. Did I just get a case that has a modern movement installed? Does this case look familiar to anyone? I haven't been able to find one like it yet.

Any advice for avoiding this in the future if I can't take the face plate off and check the movement?

    Thanks,
    John

Mods - if you want to change it to something else, I'm ok with that. I can't edit it myself otherwise I would.

    Sorry, y'all.

Well, John, you have attended a $90 seminar as I like to call it. I would be willing to wager that most of us have been to one at some time or another. I once got caught up with auction fever at a live auction and paid a few hundred dollars for a lovely 3 train German Box Clock only to get it home and discover the entire strike train had been removed. Oh well, live and learn.

If you get it running, it can be a conversation piece and reminder of the learning curve we all go through.

    Welcome and good hunting,
    Walt

The hands and the hand nut would tell me that it isn't an older American made clock.

Can we see how things are mounted in the case?
It might help to see if it is a marriage or original.
I would suspect it is a Korean case as well. They created
many of these that look like this. It is likely from the
1970's. At $90, if it were one of the original clocks, it would
have been a very good price.
This style of clock, usually, fetch higher prices.

Thanks, y'all. After decades of collecting cameras, radios and art, I'm usually pretty good at telling what is truly old and what's just been made to look old. I thought I had this one nailed for sure.

My mother-in-law is Korean (making wife half-Korean) so not only will this clock serve as a good reminder of doing due dilligence, it may also please my mother-in-law to have a Korean clock in the house

Tinker Dwight - I'm attaching a few photos. I couldn't get all four mounts in the same pic so I split it into two. Also, I am including a pic of the gong mounting block (I think I got the nomenclature right). It has JC on it so maybe that'll be telling as to what it is.

Thanks again for the responses and input.

    Cheers,
    John

In this life, we must all pay for our lessons. Enjoy the clock for what it is.

You're absolutely right, Ray. I was really just disappointed in realizing my treasure wasn't what I thought it was. It still sound beautiful and looks great so I will indeed enjoy it.

Best of all...I'm learning. And I learned it inexpensively so it's even better.

It was clearly the original movement in the case.

It is a 31 day Korean movement, and it is totally unwound, usually a sign that it was working when last used.

Dwight and Harold, thank you. Now that I know what it is, I can pop off and figure out who made it and what it might be worth. To me, it's invaluable as a learning tool and conversation piece. Plus it really spruces up the spare bedroom where my Korean mother-in-law sleeps

    Cheers,
    John

Harold, I forgot to add that it does indeed work...like a champ. That's the one thing I confirmed by testing before I bought it.
