    Default Marine Chronometer Service

    Greetings,

Wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for chronometer service? Just basic disassembly, replacement of jewels, re-pivots, that sort of thing. I'm looking for somebody with a bunch of experience and capability.

Philip Stoller of Bloomington Illinois recently overhauled and repivoted my Irish chronometer. He serves Central Illinois.

Here it is. From the best that I can gather, these guys parted ways in 1863. It notably sports Poole's Auxiliary. It has a beautiful and complete "fancy" coromandel box that is currently in the hands of Gary at Ship's Clock Cabinetry.Click image for larger version.

Do I see a Poole's auxiliary balance on this chronometer?

Yes you do. I'm not sure who the real maker of this piece was.

According to "Chronometer Makers of the World", Neill Brothers are recorded as trading at 23 High Street, Belfast c1865-1916. Your serial number appears to date the chronometer to c1915, so one of the last.

Mercer is wrong in this case. A review of Belfast directories from the 1850-1865 time frame confirms that they operated in the mid 19th century. Only S D Neill operated in the early 20th. I have Mercer's book myself.

I am aware there are a number of errors in Mercer. Do you have the first edition or is it the revised version? (Mine is the first edition so I am curious to know if it has been corrected).

No. I have the revised edition. It reads: "Neill & bros, Robert (N) 23 High St., Belfast c.1865-1915. Succeeded John Knox in 1816." Looks like a confusion of info about their father Robert Neill and the brothers John R. and James Neill. I think Sharman D. Neill was James's son. The brothers apparently split in 1863 in a non-cordial way and John remained at 23 High St and James started his own shop on another street. Both tried to capitalize on the reputation of their father.

There has clearly been no correction to that entry then. Thanks for the update.
