Default Octava Watch Company 8 Days: Any Idea To Its History?

Got myself this non working 8 Days watch (pocket? eh, its very heavy). Dial has

    8 Days
    Accurate Time Keeper
    Extra Quality

    And inside movement reads

    OCTAVA WATCH COMPANY SWITZERLAND
    15 FIFTEEN JEWELS
    2 TWO ADJUSTMENTS
    USA R 816321

Lower inside of the back just reads 'A'. Has thick bevelled front glass and seems like nickel/chromium body.

Was wondering if I got myself a railroad watch or what? Request forum to help on this one regarding its age, type and history (amplification of A) as well as a West End Hebdomas which I am posting separately.

It seems it is NOT USA R 816321 but USA P 816321. Patent filed in March 1905 and issued in Mar 1906

    POM,
I moved your inquiry to the proper forum as these watches are not American.
    Thanks

    Hi POM,

Now, try fishing on Mikrolisk for "Octava" and see what you can catch . . .

I don't think that this would be accepted in any US railroad for official timing! It is however an interesting mechanism, as explained by the patent documents.

    Regards,

Hi Jim, I jhad put it under America due to American patent.
Does it mean every company needed a separate American patent?

Graham, Octava throws up some A Schild who made many companies and was one of his!

    !
I would venture to guess that it was good business practice to cover your invention in the US as well as the originating country?

Perhaps they included the US patent in an effort to add some marketing clout?

No, they would do it to protect their patent against copying in the USA ... especially if they were selling their watches in the USA.

I don't see it marked with the Swiss patent number. Wouldn't that be enough if protection was what they were shooting for? The location of the engraving is part of the indication of its purpose, in my opinion.

A Swiss patent only protects an invention in Switzerland. The same is true for each country which operates a patent system.

Right, but, the Swiss patent isn't even there, so I'm not so sure that copyright protection was their reason for putting the US patent number. None of the other markings are there for any other reason but to relate information to the consumer/retailer (seeing as they are in English), so I figure the same for the reference to the patent.
