If thee hole is to large it can be narrowed by simply giving it a tap with a flat staking punch!

First check that the hand is properly seated. On some of these old watches the square is a bit larger towards the center and if the hand is not properly pressed down it may come loose quite easily!

@Skutt, didn't some of the larger PWs with the square holed minute hands have a little tiny pin that held them on? I have probably 18s Seth Thomas clock that is basically a watch movt in a small case that has a tiny pin holding the minute hand on. Maybe the pin hole is plugged with dirt and not visible. Just a thought.

    samking73,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Personally I have not seen the pin solution but it sounds like a possible solution for a large pocket watch. I have of course seen it on clocks so why not on a large pocket watch........

I have been collecting pocket watches for 58 years and have handled and worked on hundreds of Key wind watches. I have never seen a minute hand that was attached by a pin. All hands I have seen are friction fit.

As was said above, make sure the hand is set down far enough on the cannon pinion. I use the proper diameter stake from my staking set to tap the hand into place.
