Default cuckoo music box governor replacement

    Hello,

I need to replace the music box governor for this cuckoo clock. I am however unsure of how to go about doing this and how to select the correct one. Timesavers has several available but the fans do not look like this one. Any information will be appreciated. The owner has a lot of sentimental value to the clock and I really want to help him.

    Thanks in advance.

    HI Bernard,
You count the number of tines on the comb then choose the correct governor as I recall.

You need to know how many teeth on the pinion. Count them and let us know.

Yes, the teeth on the driven pinion has to match. Usually it's 14, but this can not usually be varied.

Further, you will probably not be able to find one that has the three arm lever mounting tab. You will probably have to mount the 3 arm lever on a new fabricated tab. This tab can be fastened under the comb screw. The newer ones are made this way and that is what you are buying. Actual replacements for the old part are long gone.

Be sure to cover yourself on labor and parts cost.

These things are really bad for your mental health.

You can bend the tabs out on these and bush them. You have to be careful when bending them back though. Plus if the governor is bad the rest will probably need to be bushed also off the chime drum. After doing a few of these, you'll get better at it. When you can't find parts ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

If you are referring to the pinion marked in red on the attached picture, there are 11 teeth. This then means Timesavers does not stock the item. The closest I can find is a 12 leaf from Perrin:

Is there a huge difference between the two?

The other possible option is to order a complete music box. There is one on ebay, but the seller does not offer international shipping.

That appears to be the major difference in the governors. Perhaps you could order the one for the 12 tooth and just switch them out if your wheel is still in good condition. They're never "plug 'n play" and need slight modifications.

Good idea, shutterbug. That wheel is still in excellent condition. I will place the order. Thanks!
