So true - especially for efficient work.

Steve,
Maybe down under such things are termed trade secrets and special voodoo; but here in the US are easy to discover. Many old time spinners mixed up their own lubricants. I buy mine by the...
Here is my lathe assortment from small to larger and by type:
175318 WW modified to two range variable speed
175319 WW lathe and a few of the accessories.
175320 WW dedicated to making lantern...
Why do you insist on doing this simple job the hard way? Knurl the shaft, "tin" it, or make an L tab. Sheesh.
Jim
Doug,
You could lightly knurl the shaft to increase its diameter.
Jim
wefalck,
Yes , that web page describes/shows things pretty well. You can have your browser translate the text then read and correct mistranslations by hand.

Please restate the question.

Tool steel turned on a screw cutting lathe using a tool bit precision ground to the "tooth gap" shape. The resulting screw shape gets drilled/reamed to fit the hobber, teeth ground in to create a...
No, my new toy is a real hobber. As I indicated on the web page, the cutter and wheel being cut are geared to turn together. The hob will be screw shaped (with cutting teeth) and having the...
Guys;
I just picked up this hobber and thought some of you might want to see it. Enjoy.

Frank,
Could you send me the link for purchasing the Alec Price tower clock plans? Thanks.

Luke;
Even though I have a selection of commercially made boring bars, I usually use my home made ones. For over 50 years I have made my boring bars fron Allen wrenches. The long end of the wrench...
Use sealing wax (from stationary or candle shop for impressing seal on envelope flap) or dop wax (from lapidary/jewelers supply shop). Both are hard waxes and set up within seconds. You are making...
A wax chuck works just fine on a larger lathe and perfectly for what you have in mind. Since what you want to make has good surface area, you will be fine. Your wax chuck will grip better if you...
Jere, I enjoy your web pages and thank you for putting them up. If I did not already have an assortment of various machines, I could be very happy with a Cowell lathe and accessories. Nice web...
Detergent oil holds contaminants in suspension. Non-detergent types do not.

I use commercial sewing machine oil in my WW cone bearing lathes. This is a high quality oil which will not gum up. It works fine and is all I will ever use. I use the same oil in the spindle of...
Cazboy,
I like to use drill blanks in either hss or carbide. These are already hard. I use an old GRS diamond wheel setup for sharpening. The wheels are changed as needed. Critical is the holder...

Doug;
Piece o' cake. Engrave the words on 3/8" brass square bar. I do this on my old Gorton 3U pantograph engraver. Use a raised reverse font set. This gives lettering as seen on stamps.
The...
In addition to Levin 3 and 4 jaw chucks I regularly use an assortment of the small Sherline and Chinese chucks to save time. Rather than switching jaws, I just change chucks. One is even a self...
Ordinarily cutting oil would not be used when knurling brass. It causes chips to stick to the stock and thus become embedded in the brass. Cleaner knurls in brass are done dry with chips constantly...
I just added to this for those following along.
Veritas, yes my shop is pretty well equipped. It took me 50 years to to get it where it is. Fortunately, I was able to get it all to pay for...
Chris;
How many years do you want your clocks to run? If 100 to 200 years is good enough, make hard brass pinions with a fly cutter.
Lantern pinions well made work fine.
The dirty little...
This will be a huge project with lots of experimentation along the way. For those who might want to watch the progress over the next few months, here is the link:
