A high grade, quite early Columbus

Rate this Entry
Hi again!
I bought it as parts movement, but it's actually a high grade, nicely finished Columbus, so I thought maybe I could just add it to my collection.
Quite unfortunately, it's an early piece, with bearings in the potence screwed down from the top. These need short balance staffs, that are difficult to get.

So I decided to use a 16s watch staff.
I had to reduce the thickness of the balance hub, but unfortunatelty I still bent the balance slightly when riveting.
You can see the difference in the width of the balance rim cuts showing the deformation...

To make it spin so nicely, I had to straighten the balance horizontally to make it flat and file down the pivots.
Yes, the staff was still a bit too long and these early Columbus watches have very thin bearings. There is no way to try to get a matched set for a longer staff, but these watches can run on very short pivots no problem.
I used a flat collet under the roller table for proper positioning.

This is a higher grade - 16j adjusted - watch, and it has a lovely finished palet fork:

Assembling on - the winding pinion and gear train:

Barrel:

And the dial side. Notice that this watch has the new click design, different from the earliest ones with circular spring.

It's a beautifully finished movement and runs pretty well now.
It's 16 jewel, adjusted model with Breguet hairspring, patent regulator (traditionally missing screw) and d/s dial.

I recased it in a Fahys case.

Lovely, ain't it? Shame I bent the balance, but like I said - original staffs are very hard to get, unfortunately...
