  1. An Elgin case report...

    ...on a Wadsworth case.

This post shows an interesting snap-back water resistant Elgin watch case by Wadsworth from circa 1955-1965.

First - assembling a late Elgin 687 movement:

Gotta admit - this movement is small and not so pleasant to work on as the big ones, where everything is so big and easy.
It's a late movement with rather crude, unattractive finish, but ...

  2. And so I got myself a Swiss fake...

A free Saturday - something that does not happen very often, at least not for me.
And so, having a lot of free time, I decided to attend to a D.D.Neveren watch I recently got.
It's a large, circa 6cm watch, bigger than any other pocket watch I have.
A busted, rusty piece missing one hand and crystal, in non-working condition...

  3. And another early Elgin :)

    Very early in fact!

Yesterday I unpacked Fred's mail, despite my initial idea to wait for the case to arrive.
No - I'm not THAT patient to wait. Having a No 558 Elgin in a box and not take a look? No, that's not me

And now that it's unpacked... why not take a look inside?
    No way to wait, again!

In the description, there was a slipping mainspring and gummy balance.
Sounds very typical for an old movement and I admit the movement did look ...

  4. Another early Elgin on my workbench

    And hello again!
Today I present you my newest buy - an old wreck that once used to be an Elgin watch:

Or National Watch Co watch to be precise.
The movement was out of the case, but the case looks original - correct period and correct screw mark placement on the rim. The watch had plenty of visible damage, and so it only reached $48 on eBay.
Is that a bargain? Not in this state, ...

  5. The Three Emperors' Corner - part six - grey as a socialist block of flats...

What I state in the tilte is not entirely true anymore, as most of these are currently being refurbished and painted in nice, bright colors. Going back a decade and more, we had plenty of grey, ugly socialist blocks of flats. Not willing to start a discussion in topics ranging from economy, through sociology to general politics, laove them or hate them - they surely provided a loot of flats for people to live at reasonable cost.
Actually, I grew up in one of those. And I have mixed feelings ...
