A grade 290 indeed, but with nice, two tone finish...
Elgin hardly ever made two tone movements (a 17j 12s probably being the most common), which is a touch strange, considering they obviously had the means to do so.
The movement I got needed some repairs, mainly - the balance ...

  2. A visit in Glashutte's watch&clock museum in Germany...

Bid you all a warm welcome!

I've only just returned from France, or - to be precise Alsace (or Elsass if you like), and I'm writing this post tasting my freshly bought genuine French absinthe (to boost my creativity), so excuse me if I happen to be a touch excentric...
Anyway - all last week I was on holiday (a rather busy holliday) in a quiet, small village of Ihtratzheim in Alsace, mostly to see the charming small wine-making towns of the area and large cities of Mulhouse, Colmar ...

  3. Fancy 7 jewel... part two - fancy case

Good day to you all again!

This blog post is about another 7 jewel Elgin watch, and another reason a 7 jewel watch can be attractive - a fancy case.
Of course a 7 jewel movement in a fancy case often leaves a temptation to discard the movement and use the case for a 'better' purpose.

  4. An old, rusty verge...

I still remember the good old days, when internet was not very popular and relatively expensive, eBay was not yet even known in Poland and Polish auction websites were just getting started.
Those days the antique fairs like the one in bytom or Gliwice, held once or twice a month used to be places where true gems could be found.
Today these places turned, with very little exceptions in unattractive markets full of crap, and truly interesting pieces are very hard to find.
    Funny - ...

  5. Fancy 7 jewel... part one - fancy dial

Seven jewel watches... usually low end versions, not very collectable, not interesting, mass made nothing specials.
Thinking about fancy 7 jewel American movements, one would probably think of 7 jewel Hamiltons, that are scarce enough to cal them so...
But that's not a post about a 7 jewel Hamilton.

    It's a post about a good Elgin - 12 size model 3 grade 303.
We all know model 3 very well. Collecting American watches it's impossibe not to see one of them every once ...
