One possibility is that the roller jewel has broken or fallen out. This could cause the watch to suddenly stop running even though the balance wheel still can turn freely. If this occurred during running, the mainspring would not have run down completely, giving you the impression that the most recent winding "stopped short". This is not "terminal" and is easily fixed.
