Here’s an occupational shaving mug with the same name as the mainspring gauge box shown in a thread on the 149 board. The first letter is “J” as well. What are the odds?

Did your mug come with any history indicating
a South Bend origen? You could ascertain the date of the box through stamp and postmark comparison and then search census records for all the contemporary J.Hardings and, finally,
hope one of them is listed as a watchmaker. In this internet era that should only take a few minutes. Great coincidense and a
wonderful mug!

I'd say the odds are pretty good! Or quite a coincidence, to say the least. Either way, Cool piece of ephemera.
I checked my easy-access census/genealogy sources for Hardings in South Bend, but didn't come up with anything, so unless someone has their own S. Bend city directory from the early 1900s, I think identifying this guy means doing it the old-fashioned way (you know, hitting the library or archives, spinning through reels of old microfilm, finding a film reader that actually works, etc.).
