Vacheron serial number date?

Hello all, I just lucked up on an 18 size Vacheron. The serial is 207,300- with a patent date of 1884. Is the collective wisdom still that these were for the U. S. market and sold uncased?

They were designed for the North American market, to fit in standard U.S. cases, at least as early as 1887 (http://static.flickr.com/22/29401292_bb26e20e38_o.jpg).
