Hi folks,

Well, we are 12 pages into this now. There are some well crafted and thoughtful words here, but a good deal of venom too. I'm talking about the switching topic. I don't think it's showing our best side. What do you think?

Tom Chaudoir:

I have a couple of questions;

Does the switching topic violate any rules of this MB, if so where and why has it not been edited to conform????

Does the lack of editing and adequate controls lead to placing NAWCC in a bad light or does the subject that is being talked about???

Frankly, I don't see the potential harm to the NAWCC. You'd have to be pretty devoted as a newbie to chew your way through 12 pages of replies. That the last few replies have held some vittriol does not invalidate the value of the discussion as a whole, nor does it suggest that the topic is only capable of generating vittriol from this point forward. Let's not over-react.

Sam,

"Does the switching topic violate any rules of this MB.."

The topic doesn't violate any rules. The thread may be flirting with them.

"Does the lack of editing and adequate controls lead to placing NAWCC in a bad light or does the subject that is being talked about???"

That assumes lack of editing and adequate controls. The question reminds me of, "Answer yes or no. Have you stopped beating your wife?".

Greg,

Well said. It's just tough to hear most of the people when a very few are very loud. I'm hoping the poll will show the wider opinion. Even the very loud can vote only once. It's still not a perfect indicator, as the majority have not "chewed through" the topic and are unlikely to. I voted to leave it alone.

Tom:

Thank you for your answer. I am sure that since you now post that the thread does not violate any rules of NAWCC or this MB, you understand that this poll is useless for you can not close it or delete it unless of course you use the standby that anything or any reason can be justification to delete threads.

As far as you beating your wife, I do not know and did not ask. TIC

Sam,

You asked if the topic violates any rules. I said no. This is the topic.
QUESTION-DO YOU BELIEVE THAT SWITCHING IS GOOD FOR HOROLOGY?

That line, the topic, does not violate any rules. I'm quite sure of it. Don't read anything else into it.

Actually I asked if any of the thread violated any rules of NAWCC or of this MB. I have also read many of your statements in the past desiring threads to be edited instead of deleted. This poll suggests that you desire to delete it or lock it.

My opinion is that there is much information being discussed here and that only those posts that become excessively vitriolic should be deleted or edited, but there again you are the Administrator and the rules here are your Rules and not necessarily rules approved by Council.

Sam,

Ok, let's take a look;
"Does the switching topic violate any rules of this MB.."

Later the same day;
"Actually I asked if any of the thread violated any rules of NAWCC or of this MB."

Misreading what I write is one thing. Misreading your own words is just stunning. I'm sorry, but I can't take this seriously anymore. You seem to have veered off onto dirt road, and I'm not following.

Tom:
Since you misunderstood what the intent of my first Questions were, I did try to elucidate. It was not my intent that you should just take my first question about the Topic yet the entire 11 pages of discussion.
As Quoted by the rules of this board "You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by this BB. Although this BB does not and cannot review the messages posted and is not responsible for the content of any of these messages, we at this BB reserve the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever." It seems a waste to post a poll asking permission to delete it or close it, since on our registration we have already given you permission to do anything you want to do.

He seems to me to be politely asking if we are sick and tired of the thread or not. I for one am! I think the poll is much more interesting than the actual thread has become!
I vote to leave it alone and let it die a natural death (hopefully soon!) or go on for eternity. I`ll just skip over it!

Tom,

I have gleaned much from this topic and have had many of my concerns about watches answered. Several of the collectors have also answered my questions off line and one even supplied me with a booklet.

While I think switching is bad for horology, I like serious in depth discussions and answers on early watch subjects. This topic is great for holology and I thank Mo for starting this one!
