I am confused between models 99 and 08. I always thought the 99 had a whiplash regulator, and the 08 a star wheel. Have I got them reversed?

The 1908 model has the setting lever at 11:00. It usually also has the Ohlsen (sp?) regulator that is shaped a little like a figure 8. I think the reason for the model change was primarily to simplify the wind indicator mechanism. The great majority of the wind indicators are 1908 models.

Of course those are Crescent St and Vanguards. There may be an equal number of Riv. Max. wind indicators in the two models.

The crown wheel is smaller on the model 99. The whiplash regulator was used on higher grade Waltham 16s models. There may also be difference in the click spring between the two patent dates.
