I have been working on two Waltham 8 Day 15 Jewel movements and have not been able to find decent replacement main springs. I am able to get a better balance wheel motion (about 360 deg) with my origial springs than I can get with the replacment springs (about 300 deg).
The new springs from Newall have no reverse bend in them when uncoiled. Four out of 6 Bestfit had the same problem. The two Bestfit with the reverse bend gave me about 400 deg of motion.
It seems to me that the current available replacement springs are too soft. Anyone have a solution for this problem?

Phil, they are the 37 size clock/watch used in car clocks, Waltham chronometers etc. Maybe I should post it also in watches?

Stan, Thanks for your suggestions. I have been collecting and rebuilding the 8 day cloks for some time. As you note they are very sensitive to bushing hole wear.My general practice is to rebush the pallet, escape and fourth wheel bushings and replace the 2 mainsprings.A good cleaning and minor escapment adjustment gets them running with a balance wheel motion of about 400 degrees.

I have an old pair of waltham Permaforce springs that I use as a reference and use to compare the balance wheel motion against the new springs. The currently available springs do not show a reverse bend when unwound. They are all made by Newall and I think they are too soft.

Dear Stan:
Many thanks for your kind response to my request. I would like to buy 3 sets (6) of the Waltham original Permaforce 8 Day springs from you.

Let me know the price and I can either pay with a credit card or send you a money order.
