Repairing a tall clock. The dail says "Daniel Role" with "Reading" below. Does anyone have info on this maker?

I'm assuming "Reading" is the Pennsylvania city.

I looked up the name in my 1955 "Pennsylvania Clocks and Clockmakers" but found no listing for Role.

It's very possible that he was a dial painter. Is it written small or on the back of the dial?

I'll look harder through the book, it might list dial painters too but I doubt it.

Pictures would help, the clock, dial and movement.

You may be looking at a Daniel Rose clock (the old s may look like an l)....Reading, PA.

I agree, as Daniel Rose was a well known Reading maker. We would love to see some good pictures.

Looked this up in "Loomes". Daniel Rose listed as Reading PA USA, 2 generations with the same name 1749-1827 and 1820-1827. Also listed is a Daniel Rose in London UK which is probably a misspelling of Daniel Rolfe (also spelt Rofe and Roofe) 1677-95. So dating your clock from the style of the case would narrow this down

Again, good pictures would help. I suspect what you're seeing is an old style "s", which can look like an "f".

Just bringing this up again.

Yes, I'd say ROSE, too.
