Cleaning metal dials

First off - be very careful :smile:

It depends on the type of dial that it is - what type of metal, how bad and what type of problem it has, and how the numbers are laid on.

Give another post with as much detail as possible, and pictures of the dial will also be helpfull - and we might be able to get some pointed advice on the issue...

Simple Answer DON'T !!!

Maker's name is often on top of Laquer and anything you do will probably remove that.

I usually give it a try only when I have line up a dial refinisher and then I try mild solvents and as soon as I see any marking damaged stop and send it to a pro.

What they have is a stock of stencils to replace makers names and logo's after thay have taken it to bare metal.

There is some instructional information in Saunier's Watch repari manual from late 1800's and a quick read of that should give you a clue what you are getting into.
