Bunn Special - Gold Flashed

I recently acquired a 21j Bunn Special that is all over gold flashed. Pillar plate, bridges, winding wheels, screws, dustband - even the setting lever. Roy Ehrhardt's 1978 book on Illinois watches indicated these were produced in the s/n range 3,541,001 thru 3,542,000. Mine is s/n 4,683,xxx.

This is puzzling......

Does anyone have information?
