Hi. I just registered on this board. =)
I recieved a pocket watch yesterday, from my late grandfather. He got it from his father.
it looks alot like this one:
http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/Keywind-pocketwatch-classic-ant...tem#ebayphotohosting (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/Keywind-pocketwatch-classic-antique-GREAT-no-reserve_W0QQitemZ5070218669QQcategoryZ3940QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting)
but it does not have the 'nazi-style' numericals. It does have the same type of hands (but the larger has a diamond-like stone on it).
it has S&F 0,800, and the crescent half-moon and crown. and also a number 55212, which is under both the top lid, and the lid for the mechanics.
sorry I can't post any photos... but if you can give me any information about this watch I'd be very thankful =)
This pocket watch thing seems cool... think i might start looking around and buing a few. =))
Thanks alot
/yours, Jonas

It looks like it's probably Swiss, 7 jewel, cylinder escapement. This type of movement is commonly referred to as a "bar movement", due to the bar shaped bridges. It is key wind and key set (meaning that you'll need a key to both wind and set the watch. I would guess the age at late 1800's to early 1900's. The finish on the movement is called "gilt" (it's gilded). The 0,800 is the purity of silver (80%). The 55212 is a serial number, and the S&F would probably be part of the hallmark or a case makers mark. Here's (http://www.925-1000.com/) a link to a place that may be able to provide some information from the hallmark. Here's (http://poincon.blogspot.com/) another (for watches). It appears to be a lower grade watch.

Sorry about the poor quality on the markings. The one above S&F 0,800 is some sort of distressed bird.
Is is really swiss? Doesn't germany have the moon & crown, and isn't the bird a german mark of silver?
Thanks

Good afternoon Jonas
The movement is Swiss, and Smudgy is right about the date, late 1800s--early 1900s. The crown and crescent moon hallmark, plus the bird (I believe it is supposed to represent a wood grouse)is a Swiss hallmark. The fact that the silver is 0.800 purity suggests that the watch was made for the German market.
Do you have a key for winding and setting? If not you can buy a set of about 12 modern keys on ebay for less than £10 sterling. One of them would be sure to fit. Winding and setting are usually done by the same key, but sometimes two different size keys are required.

Ah! ok, I understand.
Yes I do have a key for it, and the clock works fine.

Is there anyway to get an estimation of what this watch might be worth`?
Would be nice to know (not that i'll sell it, since it's been passed down from my great grandfather).
thanks
