OK, I've screwed up the courage to do my first staffing job! I have picked an 18s Elgin #9834995. I purchased an assortment of staffs from a supplier, Inverto at the ready. Removed the old staff, no problem. Problem is, it does not look like any 857 in the assortment. It looks good, so must be the wrong staff. Next problem..with no referance, which 857 do I use? What do all of the other letters mean (I assume "O" is for oil groove") ie NSLH, NSSH, OSLH & OSSH? Thanks in advance.

Glenn,
OS stands for "old style" NS for "new style". SH stands for "short hub", etc.
Hope this is of some help.

You must know if it is a double or single roller table? Pivot length and diameter? In other words you will need a micrometer to do some checking. Maybe take down some dimensions on the jewelers latehe. The supply house usually want's a lot more info than just a caliber number as they verried so much over the years. Yes you can order some assortments for the most popular American pocket watches but be prepared to modify the staff if needed. Do you have a staking set? Poising tool and caliper to to adjust the balance?
I guess what I am saying is for the benifit of people that it is not as simple as it sounds to take a watch in to the watch maker and get them fixed. But never be discuraged as this is the only way you can learn to do this kind on work.
